April 2013

A very long road trip from Hanoi with only one stop. Valentine was excellent, accommodation, food and service. The crew and staff were excellent.

Bedroom quite small, air-con very welcome, but adequate, with a good bathroom. Terrific to wake up, open the curtains and look out on another new vista. Junks, following a new policy from the Vietnamese Government are now painted white, they look ridiculous, the more so as most only have superficial coat of white in the hope that the law will be rescinded.

Weather was very overcast and misty, although nearly 30C, which means it's not good for sightseeing or photography. First afternoon, we cruised to a beach in the bay and walked up to the top of a viewpoint-the problem was that the mist precluded getting a good view of the karsts. A great pity. On our return we made spring rolls with a member of the crew which gave everyone a laugh.

After dinner of many small courses, we fished for squid off the side of junk with the aid of a very bright light, which was fun and different! Next day, after a large breakfast, we went on a tender to visit a water-village. It was so fascinating to see day to day life for the villagers.

Next day was sunny and clear and we had a kayak and paddled into large caves and out into lagoons with sheer cliff sides and vivid blue water. The second evening we watched the episode of Top Gear when the boys visited Vietnam. The middle aged Canadian couple on board with us, looked bemused at the antics of Jeremy, James and Richard! The video though, was past its best, with frequent break downs. Overall, we had an excellent visit. Not to be missed.

January 2013

From the beginning to the end our cruise on the Valentine Premium was a dream. We were picked up punctually in Hanoi and driven approx. 3.5 hours to Halong Bay. We only made one stop on the way so it was fine. We met Bobi our guide for the trip and he was sweet and adorable and very knowledgeable. We chose this boat as we were 4 people in total (2 Adults and 2 Children) and wanted our privacy. We could tell the crew what we preferred – told them we did not want to swim in the bay with 30 other tourists so we were shipped to a secluded bay where there was no one else. It was a dream. The crew was amazing. The food splendid and as I do not eat meat they made accommodations for me and served me a different dish every time the menu said meat on it. It was very sweet. We woke up at 2 am to watch the soccer game with the last night we were there and the crew helped set everything up for us. It was just great. We also left out a few of the too touristy sights and instead enjoyed our own personal time on the boat and in the water. We went Kayaking and to Surprise Cave. Also the Fishing Village, and we even had a Tai Chi session in the morning…... We did 2 nights and 3 days and it was all over far too soon. Thank you so much for the amazing time.
